Citroen C4 & C4 X - Reveals New Mild Hybrid Engines

A new mild-hybrid technology is being implemented by Stellantis on more existing models. With this update, Citroen has introduced a new “Hybrid 136” trim for the C4 and C4 X, aligning itself with the C5 Aircross enhancements.

Stellantis claims that 40 percent of the parts in its new turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine are new, even though it uses a mildly electrified version of the ubiquitous 1.2 PureTech.

With the new six-speed automatic gearbox (e-DCS6), a small permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, as well as the inverter and the ECU, is integrated within the auto gearbox casing. Regenerative braking allows the 48V lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 432 Wh to charge.

The battery is mounted beneath the driver’s seat and is energized by a 48V lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 432 Wh.

Citroen C4 & C4 X - Reveals New Mild Hybrid Engines

With a power output of 28 horsepower (21 kW / 29 PS) and a torque of 55 Nm (40.6 lb-ft), the electric motor contributes only 12 horsepower (9 kW / 12 PS) to acceleration.

Gas-powered, the 1.2 PureTech produces 134 horsepower (100 kW / 136 PS) and 230 horsepower (170 lb-ft).

Citroen claims that despite being a mild hybrid, the C4 and C4 X can be driven in electric mode for up to 50% of the time when driving in urban areas, regardless of whether it is a mild hybrid.

Therefore, the amount of fuel consumed in these 1.2 PureTech 130 EAT8 versions is 20 percent less than that in the non-electrified 1.2 PureTech 130 EAT8 versions, allowing for 20 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions (107g/100km in the WLTP mixed cycle).

As a compact crossover vehicle as well as a fastback twin, the crossover car was introduced in 2020 and 2022 respectively.

It has remained largely unchanged in terms of visual appearance. It’s the first time they’ve been equipped with mild-hybrid 48V technology under the hood, making it possible for them to offer more powertrain options besides the standard gasoline and diesel engines, as well as the fully electric models.

Approximately 25 percent of the C4 sales and 35 percent of the C4X sales in Europe are electric, which proves that buyers have a preference for electric vehicles - at least when it comes to this particular model, according to the French automaker.

Orders for the new C4 and C4 X are already being taken, with deliveries beginning in spring 2024.

Despite its higher price, the Citroen C4 136 Hybrid is still reasonably priced at €33,200 ($35,919); the C4 X Hybrid, on the other hand, has an equivalent starting price of €33,900 ($36,676).

A slight hybrid unit is also available in several Peugeot (208, 3008, 5008) and Opel models, including the C4, C4 X, and C5 Aircross (the C4 136 ).

Moreover, the new Lancia Ypsilon supermini is also expected to be equipped with the technology in 2024, as well as the next-generation Opel Crossland and Citroen C3 Aircross.
